چکیده

[1] The winter dO signal is extracted from 7 Greenland ice cores covering the past 700 years. To filter out noise and local variations in the 7 isotope records a principal component analysis is carried out on the ice core data. A comparison between the time series of the first principal component (PC1) with 67 years of winter (December to March) temperature measurements from 3 southern Greenland synoptic stations shows highly significant correlations. Southern Greenland winter temperatures are known to be greatly influenced by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). A good proxy for southern Greenland temperatures is therefore expected to reveal at least parts of the NAO signal. It is shown that the PC1 time series indeed is significantly correlated to the NAO during the winter months. The inclusion of ice core winter season dO time series in future multiproxy NAO reconstructions is therefore recommended.

Spatial variation in the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on precipitation across Greenland

[1] Ice core-derived accumulation records from Greenland have been proposed as proxies for North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) reconstruction. In a series of single-site analyses, accumulation records from ice cores drilled in western Greenland were found to exhibit the strongest linear association with NAO. In this paper, we expand on these findings by proposing a spatiotemporal statistical model...

Assessing the variability of precipitation during the Holocene from stalagmite records

Stalagmites can be dated very precisely with Th/U. The growth rate of stalagmites is generally in the range between 30 and 100 μm year. Stable isotopes sampled at a resolution of 50-100 μm yield information with a resolution ranging from a sub-decadal to centennial scale. Precipitation determines the growth periods of the stalagmites and the stable isotope signal is mainly a proxy for the inten...

Surface-atmosphere decoupling limits accumulation at Summit, Greenland

Despite rapid melting in the coastal regions of the Greenland Ice Sheet, a significant area (~40%) of the ice sheet rarely experiences surface melting. In these regions, the controls on annual accumulation are poorly constrained owing to surface conditions (for example, surface clouds, blowing snow, and surface inversions), which render moisture flux estimates from myriad approaches (that is, e...

Spatial and temporal oxygen isotope variability in northern Greenland - implications for a new climate record over the past millennium

We present for the first time all 12 δO records obtained from ice cores drilled in the framework of the North Greenland Traverse (NGT) between 1993 and 1995 in northern Greenland. The cores cover an area of 680 km× 317 km, 10 % of the Greenland ice sheet. Depending on core length (100–175 m) and accumulation rate (90–200 kg m a) the single records reflect an isotope–temperature history over the...

Estimation of spectral power laws in time uncertain series of data with application to the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 18O record

[1] Errors in the timing assigned to observations degrade estimates of the power spectrum in a complicated and nonlocal fashion. It is clear that timing errors will smear concentrations of spectral energy across a wide band of frequencies, leading to uncertainties in the analysis of spectral peaks. Less understood is the influence of timing errors upon the background continuum. We find that pow...
